The prime season for taimen fishing in Mongolia runs from late August through October. During this period, water temperatures are optimal, and taimen are most active. Early fall brings spectacular autumn colors along the riverbanks, while providing the most consistent fishing conditions with clear waters and active predatory behavior from taimen.
Guests are required to bring their own fishing equipment for the trip. We do not provide rods, reels, or tackle on site. Upon booking, we will send you a detailed packing list with recommendations for the specific gear that works best for taimen fishing in our locations, including suggested rod weights, line types, and effective fly patterns. We're happy to answer any specific equipment questions to help you prepare properly for your adventure.
All necessary fishing permits and conservation licenses are included in your package price. We handle all paperwork and permissions required by Mongolian authorities, including special taimen conservation permits. Our company contributes a portion of each permit fee directly to local conservation efforts aimed at protecting taimen populations and their habitat.
Catch and release is not just necessary—it's the foundation of sustainable taimen fishing in Mongolia. With a slow growth rate and limited reproduction, taimen populations cannot withstand any harvest. Mongolian regulations prohibit keeping taimen, with substantial fines for violations. Our operation was founded on conservation principles, and we're committed to protecting these magnificent fish for future generations through responsible angling practices.

Shishged and Tengis watershed national park remains as one of the last trophy taimen refuges. Protected solely by true remoteness of northern Mongolia’s Khuvsgul Province, local taimen population can thrive in pristine nature conditions like aeons ago. Shishged and Tengis are mighty Yenisei river headwaters – the world’s fifth longest river system and the largest river system draining into the Arctic Ocean. While they have many side streams, the Tengis and Shishged are quite unique and home to some of the world’s largest taimen.
Mongolia is a world-class destination for anglers in pursuit of trophy taimen—the largest and most powerful trout on the planet. Its remote, untouched rivers provide the perfect habitat for these legendary fish, offering an unparalleled opportunity to land a true giant. With each cast into the crystal-clear waters, anglers experience the thrill of the hunt, surrounded by Mongolia’s breathtaking wilderness.
